Criminal Cases in Athens
In Athens, DUI charges are common among UGA students and sports fans leaving a game or event. These cases need to be handled by an attorney with experience on both sides of the courtroom.
Statesman Solon wrote laws for the Athenian courts. Tort laws established specific penalties for different crimes and procedural laws told judges how to use other laws.
Unsolved Mysteries
Despite the ACCPD’s best efforts, some homicide and disappearance cases remain unsolved. This can be frustrating for victims’ families, as well as the community at large.
The ACCPD has a dedicated unit to investigate cold cases. Detectives reexamine evidence from the original investigation, using modern tools and methods to find answers. They may also partner with other agencies and organizations to pool resources and expertise.
Ancient Greece is credited with many of our most important institutions, but there are some mysteries that have yet to be solved. One of these is the murder of a man named Herodes.
The cause of his death is not known, but it’s suspected he was poisoned. The case is notable because it is the source of a famous oration by Antiphon, a prominent speaker in Athens at the time. The oration was later attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Xenophon. However, it’s not clear whether Xenophon wrote it himself.
Crime Stoppers
Crime Stoppers encourages members of the community to volunteer information that will aid in the arrest and conviction of criminal offenders in criminal cases in Athens. They operate a telephone number and Web Tips that allow citizens to give anonymous information. If their tip leads to an arrest, the caller is eligible for a reward. The program is administered by a volunteer Board of Directors.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information about a deadly shooting in Athens. On June 21, Athens-Clarke County police responded to reports of a shooting at the 100 block of Zebulon Drive. Officers arrived on the scene and found a man who had been shot. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Innocence Clinic
The Ohio Innocence Project at OU supports individuals who have spent years in prison for crimes they did not commit. This organization partners with students to investigate new evidence, file legal arguments and conduct hearings. The clinic also educates the public about wrongful convictions and the causes of them.
The clinic requires students to work 16 hours a week on cases. They carry out fact investigations geared toward filing post-conviction motions, including researching and gathering court records, locating and interviewing clients and drafting affidavits and memoranda of law. Students also participate in a weekly seminar to discuss cases and examine policy issues.
In addition to his clinical duties, Reed works on education, training and outreach for the nationally recognized wrongful conviction project. He helps prosecutors develop best practices models and engages all stakeholders in the criminal justice system and Ohio General Assembly on issues related to wrongful convictions and redress. He also assists lawyers and scholars in Asia, Africa and Europe as they establish mechanisms for fighting wrongful convictions.
Private Investigation Firms
The cost of a private investigator in Athens can vary depending on the type of investigation and the experience level of the investigator. Some investigations such as background checks or pre-employment screenings can be charged at a flat rate, while others may be billed on an hourly basis. Some investigators prefer to work on retainers, as this allows them to focus more on a client’s case and provide regular updates and reports.
Providing your investigator with all available information will help them save time and money by not having to conduct additional searches or make repeated calls or visits. Withholding important pieces of information will have a negative impact on the investigative process and could possibly cause you to lose valuable evidence or even worse, it may result in your case being dismissed.
A reputable private security company in Athens will understand which resources to use and when to maximize their effectiveness thereby saving you time and money. These resources can include databases, equipment and human contacts or “sources.”
